Upcoming Event: Annual Seed Exchange

It’s time to start thinking about what vegetables and flowers to plant in the spring! The Seed Exchange is a great opportunity to share any extra seeds you have and to pick up interesting seeds and planting advice from your fellow gardeners.

Don’t have any spare seeds to share? Come anyway! There are usually lots of seeds to go around.

Raising Chickens in an Urban Setting

Lorraine Johnson is an accomplished speaker and author on Native Plants. In addition to being a recognized “Native Plant Gardener” she also has several feathered ladies in her back yard. At our next monthly meeting, she will be talking about her experiences raising her chickens in an urban/residential setting.  Lorraine will also be available for book signing and books will be available for purchase for those interested.

Refreshments will be provided.  This event is free, although a donation of $2.00 to the Durham Organic Gardeners is suggested.

Date: Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Time: 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm

Place: Durham District School Board Building, 400 Taunton Road East in Whitby

Hope to see you there!

Update on Bowmanville Ecology Garden

Great news: We have access and use of the Bowmanville Ecology Garden at its current location until the end of September 2011.

We have secured water for the garden and will try to keep the water barrels filled.

Unfortunately we have had a cold and wet spring which, so far, has negated the need to fill the rain barrels. In short, the weather has not co-operated with gardening needs (warm weather and dry soil).

The week of May 9th to May 13 brought drier and warmer weather. In this regard, we had the opportunity to get the lawn mower going and cut and trim the grass in the garden. The garden is open to the existing gardeners from the 2010 gardening season.

We would like to confirm whether you plan on returning to the garden for next season. If we do not hear from you by e-mail, we will assume that you are not returning. If an opportunity arises, your garden plot will be assigned to another gardener or to a new gardener as we have some new people who would like to join.

In saying that, the Canadian Organic Growers have decided that this year we are not going to charge any rent for the garden plots because of the garden’s circumstances. However, if you would like to make a donation to the garden, it would be will greatly appreciated.

Please make your cheque payable to Durham COG, and send to Vince Powers. (Please contact Vince for his mailing address.)

Even though the official fee is being waived for the use of your garden bed for this year, the official and contractual requirement still applies!
If you could e-mail Len with the following notation in your reply that would be great!

“I’m returning to my garden plot for 2011 growing season and I will follow the set rules” (your name)

Please include in your return e-mail if you would like to help out with one or more tasks related to the maintenance of the garden. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any question please contact us.

We assume all gardeners will be in their same plots as last year, unless any change has been made through the secretary.

For gardening next year (2012), we are actively looking for a new location for the garden. We hope to have more information for you on this initiative by end of November, 2011.

We will see you at the garden!
