Bowmanville Community Gardens Gearing Up!

Plans for the new Bowmanville Community Garden

The Bowmanville Community Gardens are close to becoming a reality. Last year the gardens, formerly known as the Ecology Garden, had to find a new home.

After a long search, an excellent location was found. The new location will be on the grounds of the Clarington Tourism Office at Liberty Street South and the 401. Located beside a creek to the east of the Tourism Office, there is a lot of open space with easy access to parking, public washrooms, a picnic area, and most importantly, a supply of water!

Now that the paperwork is all taken care of, the hard work is about to begin. When the ground thaws and dries out, the area will be tilled and the fence put in place. Initially, the shed and compost bins from the Ecology garden will be put in the new space. In the future, there are plans to build a hoop house to provide a sheltered area where gardeners can start seeds and get a head start on the growing season.

The plan is to create between 45 and 60 plots. Each plot will be about 4 feet wide by 45 feet long and can be rented for the season by making a $30 donation to the Durham Organic Gardeners. The graphic above shows the planned layout of the gardens.
